The Barangay Readiness Enhancement and Development Interventions (B-READI) Academy: A Human Ecological Approach to Community-Based Disaster Resilience
Main Article Content
Abstract
Even though barangays are on the frontlines of disaster risk management (DRM), many lack the capacity to effectively manage these risks. This study employed a mixed-methods research design to explore the potential of a community-level partnership among academia, government, and industry. A needs assessment revealed an increased vulnerability to disasters in Barangay San Pablo Norte, Sta. Cruz, Laguna, Philippines, due to climate change and rapid social-ecological changes in Laguna de Bay. Moreover, it was demonstrated that utilizing Human Ecology as an integrative body of knowledge was effective in mobilizing multi-stakeholder partnerships to empower local leaders. The results of the pre- and post-tests showed an increase in knowledge about risk communication among participants. Beyond examining the project components and their implementation, the study provided recommendations for future research to strengthen documentation and knowledge production of successful local DRM initiatives. Ultimately, the study's findings are essential in informing mechanisms to strengthen transdisciplinary and cross-sectoral partnerships for community resilience.
